The Outfitter of Harbor Springs is hosting a new 2010 Speaker Series focused on the outdoors. Join us next Tuesday, January 26 at 7:00pm for "Exploring LTC Nature Preserves: Best Kept Secrets". Doug Fuller, Little Traverse Conservancy Director of Stewardship and local outdoor guru, will connect you with our local landscape as he shares special features and winter recreation opportunities of LTC Preserves. Admission is free and open to all. Non-perishable items for the Harbor Springs Community Food Pantry will be accepted. Art
Three Pines Studio in Cross Village is hosting its Indigo Winter Show – The colors, Shadows, Feel and Mood of Winter, runs through the end of March 2010. The exhibit features more than 70 works by 37 Northern Michigan artists who have been invited to share their vision of the indigo blues of our mid-winter landscape. College
Financial Aid for college will be the topic of a free program at North Central Michigan College on Thurs, Jan 28. NCMC’s financial aid office is hosting the program as a community service for parents and students attending or planning to attend any college or university. Crooked Tree Arts Center
Blue Moose and the Unbuttoned Zippers will be performing at the CTAC Friday, Jan 15 at 8 pm presented by the Blissfest Music Organization. BMUZ is one of the dynamic new fiddle bands arising out of the Boston neo-traditional scene. Tickets are $12 advance, $15 door, $15 reserved, students half off, members and Sr. $1 off. Advanced tickets available at CTAC, Grain Train and Blissfest.
Two new exhibitions open at the CTAC on Sat, Jan 16. From 4 to 6 pm on the 16th, in the Edith Gilbert Gallery 16 artists have been invited to interpret one line each from the Robert Frost poem Stopping By Woods on a Snowy Evening. The artists have been asked to create a piece of fine art to illustrate what their line means to them. Artists working in different media from glass to painting to textiles to photography have joined together in this experience. In the West Gallery, the 29th Annual Photography Exhibition will open as well. This year’s juried show will focus on the theme of watershed awareness. Swirl kicks off the fourth season at the Crooked Tree Arts Center on Thursday, Jan 14. Swirl mixes wine, music and art in the galleries at the Arts Center. Each month local wine purveyors will provide a wine tasting with creative hors d’oeuvres while community members mingle in the galleries and enjoy live music . Doors open at 6 pm with food and music running to 7:30. Tickets are $10 in advance and $12.50 per person the day of Swirl, when available. Only 75 tickets are sold for each Swirl. The 2010 Swirl presenters are: Jan 14 Symons; Feb 11, Lake Street Market; March 11, City Park Grill; April 22, Galley Gourmet and May 27, Toski Sands Market. Dance
Blissfest Music Organization will host a Rustic Ballroom Swing Dance Series Sat, Jan 23 at the Rustic Ballroom in Walloon Lake. Beginners are welcome. Instruction starts at 6:45 pm. Dances are $10/adult, $6/Under 18 and free under 5. Lindy and jitterbug Dance styles are taught as well as other ballroom styles and the Up North Big Band provides music with an 18 piece Big band. Film
Petoskey Film Theater will show the film “The Hurt Locker” (R) an on Wed, Jan 13 and Fri, Jan 15 at 7:30 pm at the Petoskey District Library Carnegie Bldg. This film has won dozens of awards and been nominated for 3 Golden Globe Awards, including Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Screenplay. A well-acted, intensely shot, action filled war epic, it is thus far the best of the recent dramatizations of the Iraq War. Donations are appreciated.
Native American film maker Chris Eyre will present “Smoke Signals,” his signature work and winner of the Audience Award at the 1998 Sundance Film Festival, in a free showing open to the public at 7 pm, Wed, Jan 20 in Milliken Auditorium, Traverse City. The showing will be followed by a question and answer session. Currently filming a new production in Traverse City, Eyre has been called the preeminent Native American film maker of his time. The event is sponsored by the NMC Student Life office.

PETOSKEY CHAMBER TO HOST HAWAIIAN SHIRT NIGHT THEMED BUSINESS AFTER HOURS THURSDAY, JANUARY 21 AT BAY HARBOR RESORT AND MARINA: Aloha businesses in Petoskey and Harbor Springs! North Country Kids and Tim Bondy Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation Center have joined together for the first annual Children’s Mini Triathlon for children aged 3-7, on Sat, Jan 16 and Sat, Jan 23 from 2-4 pm at Tim Bondy’s in Fairview Square, Harbor Springs. Compost Center
The Emmet County Compost Center will be accepting Christmas trees at no charge through January 31. The Center will chip the trees for mulch or process them into compost. When the compost is finished, it will be available for sale at the Center. All tinsel, stands, ornaments, and other decorations must be removed from the tree before it is dropped off. Artificial trees cannot be recycled but will be accepted as garbage for $2 per 30-gallon bag at the Drop-Off Center’s Waste Transfer Station. The facility is located at 7363 Pleasantview Rd. Fundraisers
St Francis Xavier School’s annual Gala Dinner auction takes place Sat, Feb 6 at the new Holy Childhood of Jesus Parish Hall in Harbor Springs. This year’s event, “Springtime in Paris” begins at 6:00 pm. The Gala Dinner Auction is an annual benefit and serves as St Francis School’s primary fundraiser. Featured auction items include a trip to Paris, France, catered dinners, original oil paintings and much more. A Grand Raffle drawing featuring (1) $20,000 grand prize and (8) $1,000 prize winners to round out the evening. New this year is a Preview Night with free admission on Friday, Feb 5. A great way to check out the Gala auction items. Preview Night includes music and hors d’oeuvres, beer, wine and sodas by donation. Tickets for the Gala Dinner Auction are $125 each. 45th Annual Moose Jaw Snowmobile Safari, Sat, Jan 16. Snowmobile enthusiasts,riding sleds new and old, will ride the 30-mile trip to the bean pot at Center Township Hall. Preregistration begins at 8:30 am at the Harbor Springs Sports Park, corner of Hoyt St, departure time 10 am sharp. The ride takes approximately 2 hours. SEE-North presents 12th Night, the recreation of the legend of the one night when the animals can speak in the forest. The magical night will begin with a sleigh ride to a candlelit trail where you can walk through the forest and talk to the animals. There will be indoor crafts and snacks to enjoy. Also featured will be local author-storyteller Simon Otto. This program is held at Boyne Highlands Resort on Fri., Jan 15 and Jan 22 from 6-8 pm. Pre-registration is required. SEE-North’s Rhythms of the Seasons, a new program for families to explore the wonders of the seasons. Will meet once a month all year round to examine the unique gifts and mysteries of nature through hands on activities for all ages. Next program will be Jan. 16 when Sara Tisdel, local art and environmental teacher will lead a creative exploration and observation of the outdoors. The First Presbyterian Church of Harbor Springs is hosting a non-denominational Music/Open Mic Night this Saturday, January 16 from 7-8 pm. The Bridge Praise Band will play and anyone else interested in singing or playing is welcome. If you don’t play music just come and listen to some uplifting positive music!! The Harbor Springs United Methodist Church will worship on the second Sunday after the Epiphany, Jan 17 at 11 am with Pastor Kathy Cadarette. Children’s Sunday School will be held after the Children’s Message and the Chancel Choir will sing. No Wednesday Bible Study unitl Feb. 3. Stutsmanville Chapel: For week ending Jan 17, 2010. Worship services are at 9:30 am and 11 am with High School, Middle School & Primary Sunday School held during the first service and Nursery for 1-3 yr. olds in both services. Middle & High School students meet at the Great Escape for a combined Youth Group on Sunday evenings 5:45-7:30 pm. AWANA Bible Clubs are held on Wednesday nights for age 3 through 6th grade. Men’s Support Groups meet Monday and Wednesday evenings at 6:30 pm. 40 DAYS OF LOVE study will be the focus on Sunday mornings and in small groups starting this week. Harbor Springs History Museum
The Harbor Springs History Museum.Now showing: Ships of the Great Lakes. On display until July 2010, the exhibit includes 11 ship models of Great Lakes ships including the large cruise ships that came to Harbor Springs. The exhibit may be viewed during regular museum open hours: Fri, 1-5 pm; Sat 10-2. The Historical Society offices, located on the second floor of the museum building, maintain regular business hours year round: Tues-Friday, 9 am-5 pm. H1N1 vaccination now available for everyone. Appointments for both H1N1 and seasonal flu vaccinations are available at Health Department offices in Emmet County by calling 800-432-4121 during business hours..There is no charge for H1N1 flu vaccination; seasonal flu vaccination is $25. Medicare and Medicaid are accepted on site to cover the fee.
Friendship Center
All senior citizens are welcome to join us at our location at Hillside Apartments, Community Room C for a hot nutritious meal or to join in the fun activities. The Friendship Center is open Mon, Tues, Wed, Fri from 9:30-2:30. A hot meal is served at noon. For more information call 231-526-6061.
Food Pantry
The Harbor Springs Community Food Pantry, located in the lower level of the Holy Childhood Community Center building (entrance on Third Street), is open from 9:30 am-noon every non-holiday Monday. Food is available for anyone in need in the Harbor Springs area. Those wishing to donate items may bring them to the Pantry on Monday morning or leave them in baskets inside the entrances of the church from 9:00-5:00 daily. Phone 526-2414. This is a communitywide service.
