Crooked Tree Arts Center

Cooking with the Pros at Crooked Tree Arts Center: continues on Tuesday evenings during March. Each class offers tips and tricks from area chefs. Two exhibitions are on display at the CTAC thru April 8. In the Edith Gilbert Gallery, 16 artists were invited to interpret one line each from the Robert Frost poem Stopping By Woods on a Snowy Evening. In the West Gallery, the 29th Annual Photography Exhibition featuring work by local photographers is on display. This year’s juried show focuses on the theme of watershed awareness. Harbor Springs Schools

Harbor Springs Players present “Best of Broadway”, an original musical review, on Friday & Sat, March 19 & 20 at 7:30 pm, Sun, March 21 at 3 pm at the Harbor Springs Performing Arts Center. Tickets at $10 adults, $7 students and are sold at Propellers, Between the Covers, Mary Ellen’s, and at the door.

Film

The Petoskey Film Theater will be showing the film "The Blind Side" (PG-13) on Wednesday and Friday, March 24 and 26, 7:30 pm at the Petoskey District Library, Carnegie Building. Donations are appreciated. Sandra Bullock won both an Academy Award and Golden Globe Award (Best Actress) for her role in this film.

Workshops

North Central Michigan College will host a severe weather spotter training workshop on Tuesday, March 23 from 7-9 pm in the cafeteria on the Petoskey campus. The workshop will be led by Jim Keysor, warning coordination meteorologist at the National Weather Service office in Gaylord. The program is offered to train individuals to recognize and report severe weather events to the National Weather Service in real time. The training is free and open to the public. North Central Michigan College is offering a two-hour seminar entitled “IT Auditing and Network Security” on Wed, March 24 from 2-4 pm in the Library on the Petoskey campus. This free seminar will be presented by Peter Lovaas from Dakota State University. He has extensive knowledge on information security and five years of industry experience with banks and financial institutions. Speakers/Lectures

The Outfitter of Harbor Springs continues its Outdoor Speaker Series on Tuesday, March 23, with Glenn Stark, Bay Tennis and Fitness certified personal trainer. He will discuss getting in shape for kayak season. The Outfitter invites everyone to learn how to improve your paddling strength and endurance. The event is free and donations to the Harbor Springs Food Pantry will be accepted. The event begins at 7:00 p.m. at The Outfitter on Main Street. North Central Michigan College - World Slavery: the Haitian Revolution and the Rise of American Music. Ray Kamalay traces the development of early American music from its links to slavery up to the early jazz age. A professional musician, Kamalay includes performances of the various genres. Youth

Town Hall Meeting: Preventing Underage Drinking in Emmet County will be held Tues, March 23 at the Emmet County Fairgrounds Community Center Building (dinner will be included) at 6 pm. Parents, teachers, youth, community leaders, and concerned citizens are invited to attend and learn more about underage drinking and its consequences, voice concerns, and brainstorm solutions to this problem. Featured panelists will address several key topics and talk about ways everyone can help prevent youth substance use in our community. Sponsored by SAFE (Substance Abuse Free Environment) in Northern Michigan, the Petoskey-Harbor Springs Area Community Foundation and the Charlevoix County Community Foundation. Outdoors

SEE-North’s Rhythms of the Seasons, a Family Fun Outdoor Adventure exploring the wonders of the seasons. Meets once a month all year round with Sara Tisdel, local art and environmental teacher, to examine the unique gifts and mysteries of nature through hands on activities for all ages. Each family will receive a journal to create your own nature book. At SEE-North’s yurt located at Boyne Highlands Resort in Harbor Springs. Cost is $5.00 per person. Performances

The Kenya Safari Acrobats will perform at NMC in Traverse City Tues, March 23 in a free presentation, sponsored by the NMC Student Life office. The troupe consists of six to eight highly-trained athletes who perform jaw-dropping act and antics, including fire ring jumping, a human pyramid, magic and more. Music

Bill Staines will present a concert at The Rhubarbary, the home of Maureen and Dale Scott on Five Mile Creek Road, north of Harbor Springs on Friday, March 26 at 8:00 pm. Staines is a well seasoned performer with 26 albums to his credit He has appeared on A Prairie Home Companion and on Public Radio’s Mountain Stage, and has traveled the country performing nearly 200 concerts a year. Art

Attention Artists: the 35th Annual Harbor Springs Community School Juried Art Show announces “Call for Entries”. Applications and rules are now available to download from the Community School page of the website www. harborps.org. The application deadline is March 20, 2010. Please note that this year’s show will be held on Sat, July 3, 2010 from 9 am-5 pm at Zorn Park, downtown Harbor Springs.

Three Pines Studio in Cross Village is hosting its Indigo Winter Show – The colors, Shadows, Feel and Mood of Winter, runs through the end of March 2010. The exhibit features more than 70 works by 37 Northern Michigan artists who have been invited to share their vision of the indigo blues of our mid-winter landscape. Harbor Springs History Museum

The Harbor Springs History Museum. Now showing: Ships of the Great Lakes. On display until July 2010, the exhibit includes 11 ship models of Great Lakes ships including the large cruise ships that came to Harbor Springs. The exhibit may be viewed during regular museum open hours: Fri, 1-5 pm; Sat 10-2. The Historical Society offices, located on the second floor of the museum building, maintain regular business hours year round: Tues-Friday, 9 am-5 pm. Churches

The Harbor Springs United Methodist Church: All are welcome to worship on the 5th Sunday of Lent, March 21 at 11 a.m with Pastor Kathy. Myriam Goodwin will be the guest pianist. Stutsmanville Chapel: For week ending March 21, 2010. Sunday Worship services at 9:30 am and 11 am with High School, Middle School & Primary Sunday School held during the first service and Nursery for 1-3 yr. olds in both services. Middle & High School students meet at the Great Escape for a combined Youth Group on Sunday evenings 5:45-7:30 pm. Family Nights o n Wed nights with AWANA Bible Clubs for age 3 through 6th grade and a Small Group for adults, 6-7:30 pm. Food Pantry

The Harbor Springs Community Food Pantry, located in the lower level of the Holy Childhood Community Center building (entrance on Third Street), is open from 9:30 am-noon every non-holiday Monday. Food is available for anyone in need in the Harbor Springs area. Phone 526-2414. This is a community-wide service.
