Four Nub’s Nob ski patrollers were recently nationally recognized for their years of service.

Three of the veteran patrollers were inducted into the National Ski Patrol Hall of Fame, while a fourth was given the National Outstanding Instructor Award. Not only are they the first Nub’s patrollers to be inducted into this prestigious group, they are the first ski patrollers from Michigan to receive such honors.

Linda Murphy-Jacobs has been active in the Ski Patrol since 1972. For many years she has given her time not just on the hill, but also as an instructor for OEC, CPR and Toboggan training. Murphy-Jacobs has held ski patrol leadership positions ranging from local and regional levels, all the way to serving as a representative on the National Board.

She has received numerous awards including the Central Division Lifetime Achievement Award, Gold and Yellow Merit Stars and a Distinguished Service Award. Now, she can add to that list her membership in the National Ski Patrol Hall of fame. Tom Worley has been a member of the Ski Patrol since 1964, and still serves in many capacities. Over time, he has been a director at local, regional and national levels, including as a representative on the National Board.

Worley has also received a Central Division Lifetime Achievement Award, 3 Yellow Merit Stars, Gold & Purple Merit Stars and the Meritorious Service Award. In addition to all of those commendations, he is now a member of the National Ski Patrol Hall of Fame.

Carrington “Beach” Day first joined the Ski Patrol in 1960, and he went on to serve in the Ski Patrol for the next 52 years. Serving as an adviser for the Central Division for training and testing, and as a Representative on the National Board for 12 years, Day received the 50 Year Service Award and the Central Division Lifetime Achievement Award.

Sadly, Day passed away in 2017, but his contribution to the Patrol has been recognized posthumously with membership in the National Ski Patrol Hall of Fame. Annaka Norris joined the Ski Patrol in 1993, becoming a Senior in 2000. She has served as both a volunteer and paid Patroller, becoming a Toboggan Instructor in 2000. She has also completed and instructed numerous enhancement seminars as well as Senior training and evaluation events, averaging 100 hours on-hill and 90 hours off-hill over the past two seasons. For her work in testing, training and administration, Norris was given the 2017-2018 Central Division Outstanding Instructor Award, and now has been given the National Outstanding Instructor Award.

“Nub’s Nob is fortunate to have such an extraordinary group on our Ski Patrol, with so many being inducted into the Hall of Fame at one time, and many others being given local and regional commendation as well,” said general manager Ben Doornbos. “If you know any of those Patrollers or you see them on the slopes, take the time to thank them for the aid they give to all of us as we enjoy what winter has to offer.”

Nub’s Nob is reopening this weekend, December 1 and 2, with discounted daily ticket rates with most slopes on the front and south sides open.

Nub’s Nob will open permanently for the season on Friday, December 7 with regular services and rates.
